At our school, we take the power of sport, physical education and activity very seriously and see it as an integral part of our flourish curriculum, ensuring our children are physically and mentally healthy and develop to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.

As a school, we have a passion for physical activity and sport – our target each year is for every child in the school to represent ‘Team Ravensworth’, at least once, at an inter-school sports event. From this, we have experienced terrific success in both developing our pupils’ confidence and self-esteem whilst also encouraging competitive spirit, kindness, respect, resilience, leadership and perseverance. In recent years, all of our KS2 children took part in the Richmondshire cross-country competition and we participated in Richmond competitions for: football (Years 3/4, Years 5/6 and KS2 Girls); Years 5/6 netball; Years 3/4 hockey; Years 3/4 All-Star Cricket, KS1 Multi-Skills and KS2 Sports Hall Athletics.

We provide opportunity to develop and practise skills in preparation for these events through providing a minimum of 2 hours of physical activity each week in PE sessions. Our curriculum is wide and varied, covering: striking and fielding, net and wall games, dance, gymnastics, multi-skills and athletics. To complement this, we give our pupils the best possible opportunities through drawing on outside expertise such as Skip2BFit, sports coaches and professional dance teachers. Children in KS2 attend Richmond Swimming Pool for a term of swimming lessons where they work towards the goal to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. Additional opportunities to play competitive sport are also provided through seasonal lunchtime clubs over the course of the year: including The Golden Mile, Dance Club, Football Club, Rising Stars active play through learning (encouraging girls into football) Cricket Club and many more.

Our Play Leaders play an important role in keeping our children active and they plan and deliver games and sport at playtimes and lunchtimes.

Virtual Sports Day 1st July 2020

With the restrictions in place during Summer 2020, the children of Ravensworth took part in a virtual sports day. All children were encouraged to take an active part whether at home or those attending school at the time. Children sent in scores which were collated so they could compete against their classmates.

We love being outdoors and believe that Forest Schools is a really important way to develop teamwork, independence and resilience.
